    Restoring an Antique Niagara Icebox | Dallas Furniture Restoration

    Antique iceboxes are some of the most rewarding — and trickiest — pieces we restore. This early-1900s Niagara Refrigerator icebox is a great example of what’s involved in bringing one back to life without erasing its history.

    Meet the Niagara Refrigerator Icebox

    Before mechanical refrigerators became common in American homes, iceboxes like this oak-cased Niagara model kept food cold using a literal block of ice, held in an insulated, tin- or zinc-lined compartment. This piece still has its original brass latch and manufacturer’s nameplate — details that are worth preserving rather than replacing.

    What Restoration Actually Involves

    Iceboxes present challenges most furniture doesn’t:

    • Interior staining and grime — decades of moisture inside the ice compartment leave heavy staining on the metal liner that requires careful, non-damaging cleaning
    • Hardware that’s often stuck or corroded — latches and hinges need to be freed, cleaned, and lubricated without breaking original (often irreplaceable) parts
    • An oak case finish that’s usually dry and grimy from decades of kitchen or basement use
    • Structural checks — insulation and internal framing can shift over 100+ years and need assessment before cosmetic work begins

    Our Approach

    We’re restoring this icebox’s oak case finish, cleaning and stabilizing the interior liner, and servicing the original latch hardware so it functions smoothly again — without stripping away the nameplate, the patina, or the details that make it a genuine period piece rather than a reproduction.

    Windsor Armchair Makeover: Bare Wood to Glossy White

    Spindle-back Windsor chairs are one of the best antique silhouettes for a painted finish — the turned spindles and legs catch light beautifully once they’re covered in a smooth, glossy paint instead of bare or dated stained wood.

    Before: Bare Wood, Solid Bones

    This Windsor armchair came to us stripped down to raw wood — structurally sound, with tight joints and no major repairs needed, but visually flat with no finish to speak of. Bare wood like this is actually an ideal starting point for a full color transformation.

    Why We Chose Glossy White

    Windsor chairs have a lot of turned detail — spindles, stretchers, and a shaped seat — that can easily disappear under a heavy or brushed-on paint. We sprayed this chair in multiple thin coats of glossy white to:

    • Keep every spindle crisp and distinct rather than letting paint pool between them
    • Create a bright, high-gloss finish that reads as fresh and modern rather than “antique”
    • Give the chair enough durability for regular, daily use

    The finished chair keeps its traditional Windsor shape but reads completely differently in a room — bright, clean, and current, whether paired with a farmhouse table or a more modern console.

    1970s Burl Wood Credenza Restoration | Dallas Mid-Century Refinishing

    A burl wood credenza is one of the most rewarding mid-century pieces to refinish — its swirling grain pattern is unique to every piece, and a proper refinish makes that figure the focal point of a room instead of hiding it under decades of dry, faded lacquer.

    The Piece: A Three-Door Burl Credenza

    This project came to us with a dry, sun-faded top and cabinet fronts — the kind of dullness that makes burl wood look flat instead of showing its natural depth. The case construction was solid; the finish was the only thing holding it back.

    Why Burl Wood Needs a Different Approach

    Burl veneer is thin and highly figured, which means it’s easy to sand through if you’re not careful, and it can react unevenly to stain because the grain runs in so many directions at once. We approach burl refinishing more like a fine furniture restoration than a standard sand-and-stain job:

    • Light, even sanding to avoid burning through the thin veneer layer
    • Stain applied in test patches first, since burl absorbs unevenly across its swirling grain
    • A glossier topcoat, which tends to show burl figure better than a flat or satin sheen

    The Result

    The finished credenza shows off the burl’s natural caramel-and-cognac tones with a glossy, glass-smooth topcoat. We styled it with brass hardware, a green ceramic lamp, and a framed print to show how a refinished mid-century credenza anchors an entry or dining space.
